For many wine enthusiasts, South Africa has long remained a hidden gem in the world of
viticulture. While inexpensive bottles adorned with various wildlife motifs populate store shelves, South Africa has quietly been crafting exceptional wines that captivate the senses and defy expectations. Let's embark on a journey to uncover the rich tapestry of South African wine. Nestled in a land nearly three times the size of California, South Africa boasts a rich wine-growing history that dates back to 1655. It was during this time that the world was introduced to the sweet wines of Constantia, located near Cape Town, which garnered praise and acclaim throughout Europe.
Today, South African wines effortlessly straddle the realms of the Old World and the New. These wines often exude the scents of ripe, velvety fruits while simultaneously revealing earthy undertones, finishing with an elegant restraint. Thanks to the generally warm climate, red grape varieties in South Africa ripen to perfection, yielding full-bodied wines with robust alcohol content. However, it’s the cooling ocean breezes, particularly prevalent in the Western Cape, that bestow upon these wines their refreshing acidity, making them ideal companions for a wide range of culinary delights.
Recently, the Radisson Colombo orchestrated an unforgettable soirée, a South African
wine-tasting extravaganza that transported attendees on a sensory odyssey through the
picturesque vineyards of South Africa. Nature itself contributed to the enchantment of the
evening as capricious rain showers bestowed an unexpected, almost mystical aura upon the proceedings. The rooftop setting at ON14, caressed by a gentle breeze, added an ethereal backdrop that heightened the allure of the South African wine-tasting experience.
This was an evening that promised to delve deep into the heart of viniculture, and it undeniably delivered on that promise with each sip, every delectable morsel, and every conversation that flowed harmoniously throughout the night.
The overture of the evening commenced with the sparkling Nederburg Premiere Cuvée Brut, a crisp and fresh wine with a lingering aftertaste. Mr. Rajan Dushyanthan, the Director and Head of Alcobev, a respected supplier of South African wines, guided guests on how to pair each wine with precision. His invaluable advice included the important note that chocolate does not complement wine, but salty accompaniments provide the perfect balance to the wine’s flavors. As the evening gracefully unfolded, guests were treated to an enchanting experience, starting with the exquisite Two Oceans Sauvignon Blanc. This refined wine stood out with its crisp acidity and a delightful medley of flavors, featuring hints of passion fruit, green apple, and sweet melon. Its harmonious pairing with delicate smoked salmon canapés was a culinary delight. The wine exploration continued, showcasing the craftsmanship of South African winemaking with the introduction of the Nederburg Grenache Rosé and the Two Oceans Shiraz. This journey of the senses reached its pinnacle with the grand reveal of the Nederburg Pinotage, each wine showcasing a unique facet of South African winemaking expertise.
