India is actively considering providing assistance to extend the runway at Palali airport, a statement from Ministry of Ports and Aviation said.

Ports and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva on Friday met with Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay to discuss enhancement of maritime and aviation services between India and Sri Lanka. During the meeting, High Commissioner Baglay had mentioned that Sri Lanka’s request for a soft loan facility from India to extend the runway at Palali airport is currently being evaluated.

“India is actively considering providing assistance for the requested infrastructure improvement,” he said.

During the meeting Minister de Silva had requested India to consider extending flights from Chennai to Palali up to Ratmalana in response to increasing demand.

India’s Alliance Air operates flights between Chennai and Palali and recently completed the 100th flight.

They also discussed how to expedite the proposed passenger ferry service connecting the two nations, which could immensely benefit the low-income pilgrims from Sri Lanka. (Daily Mirror)
