State Minister of Tourism Diana Gamage on Wednesday raised concerns in Parliament, calling for swift action to deter tourists visiting Sri Lanka from engaging in business activities.

She pointed out that such actions pose a threat to local businesses across the country, particularly in the Southern Province. Gamage highlighted instances of tourists on visit visas participating in business ventures in the country, stressing the need for immediate intervention to safeguard the interests of local entrepreneurs.

“This trend poses a significant threat to our local businesses, particularly in the Southern Province. We must address this issue promptly. In most countries, engaging in business or employment while on a visit visa is strictly prohibited, with severe consequences for violators. We must ensure similar regulations are enforced in Sri Lanka,” she asserted.

The State Minister opined on the importance of resolving this matter diplomatically, without causing friction with the countries concerned.

Gamage called on Public Security Minister Tiran Alles, responsible for Immigration and Emigration, to take decisive action to address the issue before it escalates into a crisis.

“This issue demands immediate attention and decisive action. Public Security Minister Alles must investigate this matter to ensure compliance with visa regulations,” she add
