The Galle Literary Festival (GLF), Gourmet Galle, and the Art Trail are vibrant celebrations of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. These events play a key role in boosting the country’s tourism industry and economic prospects. Together, they highlight Sri Lanka’s rich traditions and position it as a top destination for cultural tourism on the global stage.

In 2024, these festivals brought in a combined economic contribution exceeding Rs. 713 million. The Galle Literary Festival alone contributed Rs. 525 million. Casual visitors added an additional Rs. 150 million. Gourmet Galle and the Art Trail contributed Rs. 19 million and Rs. 92.4 million, respectively. These figures underline how such events benefit local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transportation providers.

Moreover, a defining feature of GLF’s success is its ability to attract diverse travelers. International visitors spend an average of $450 per day and typically stay for three to four days. This far surpasses the average backpacker spend of $35 per day. Domestic and casual attendees also contribute significantly, spending an average of $175 per day. This spending pattern demonstrates the substantial financial impact of these festivals.

Hirdaramani Group Director Rakhil Hirdaramani emphasized the importance of attracting high-spending tourists. He stated, “Events like the Galle Literary Festival and Kala enhance our appeal and play a vital role in supporting the nation’s tourism industry. We must prioritize such experiences and create unique offerings to engage a wider international audience.”

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Buddhika Hewawasam, highlighted the strategic value of these festivals. He stated that these events are integral to showcasing Sri Lanka as a premium travel destination. “This year, our goal is to double the number of tourists visiting Sri Lanka, with a focus on luxury travelers. To achieve this, we need to expand our infrastructure and maintain a dynamic calendar of events. Festivals like GLF are essential to these efforts.”

Galle Festivals Director Damita Nikapota shared a vision for elevating Sri Lanka’s international profile. “Festivals have the potential to transform small towns into globally recognized destinations. Events like the Galle Literary Festival can create a unique identity for Sri Lanka, drawing millions of visitors and fostering investment in infrastructure, hospitality, and cultural programming.”

These festivals also drive development. They attract skilled expatriates and international expertise while encouraging investments in state-of-the-art venues and facilities. Using global digital platforms and building international partnerships can amplify the festivals’ impact and strengthen Sri Lanka’s standing as a cultural hub.

The Galle Literary Festival offers an immersive cultural experience. Attendees engage with renowned authors, chefs, and artists. Held annually as a not-for-profit event, it spans four vibrant days in the historic city of Galle. The 12th edition will take place from February 6 to 9, 2025.
