Malaysia has achieved a major milestone by welcoming 1 million Indian tourists as of November 2024, marking a significant 71% increase compared to last year and a 47% rise from pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The milestone was attributed to Malaysia’s visa-free policy for Indian travelers, which has been in effect since December 2023, and the introduction of a new direct flight route, according to Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Tiong King Sing. The Minister, as quoted by national news agency Bernama, said the achievement underscores Malaysia’s growing appeal as a leading destination for Indian tourists.

Malaysia’s recognition as the “Most Loved Country in Asia” in June 2024 by the American finance website Insider Monkey has also bolstered its reputation. The survey reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage, diverse tourism offerings, and traveler-friendly policies.

Notably, Malaysia and Thailand are the only two Southeast Asian countries offering visa exemptions for Indian tourists, further strengthening Malaysia’s competitive edge in the region’s tourism landscape.

The surge in Indian tourist arrivals highlights Malaysia’s successful tourism strategies and its position as a preferred travel destination for Indian visitors.
