In a recent conversation with Mr. Milanka Induruwage, President of the Knuckles Tourism Circle (KTC), the untapped potential of Riverston as a premier adventure tourism destination in Sri Lanka came to the fore. Positioned strategically along the Kandy-Dambulla and Ella-Dambulla routes, Riverston is primed to alleviate visitor pressures on more crowded areas, offering a fresh, immersive experience in the heart of the Knuckles region.

Riverston boasts captivating attractions such as Sera Ella, Duvili Ella, and Bambarakiri Ella waterfalls, alongside Pitawala Pathana, famed as Mini World’s End. The area is enriched by the unique landscapes of traditional paddy fields, the Manigala Mountain Range, and Walpolamulla, reputedly Asia’s smallest village. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Knuckles area further enhances Riverston’s appeal with its biodiversity and cultural significance.

With a mild climate, lush forests, and stunning vistas, Riverston presents an ideal environment for adventure enthusiasts. The region offers kayaking and canoeing opportunities in the Kalu Ganga and Moragahakanda reservoirs, along with activities such as hiking, mountain biking, trekking, and abseiling.

However, infrastructure remains a challenge. The B274 access road, an essential route to Riverston, has been neglected for decades, with poor maintenance and a lack of signposts. Upgrading this road is crucial to improving accessibility for visitors.

Addressing the rising demand for accommodations, Mr. Induruwage emphasized the role of homestays as a viable solution. By converting historic homes into visitor lodging, Riverston can offer authentic cultural experiences that integrate traditional agriculture, local cuisine, and community life.

The KTC is committed to developing Riverston as a model for sustainable tourism by closely engaging local communities. Through skill development and micro-entrepreneurship programs, these communities can thrive while preserving their cultural heritage. KTC aims to expand these initiatives across Rattota, Atanwala, Pitawala, and Illukkumbura, promoting tourism that supports and sustains local livelihoods.

Infrastructure improvements, such as road development and enhanced sanitary facilities, are essential to showcasing Riverston’s full potential. With KTC’s collaborative approach, involving tourism providers, local authorities, and government agencies, the development of Riverston and neighboring areas is steadily advancing.

Sustainable practices are at the forefront of KTC’s agenda. To protect Riverston’s unique ecosystem, KTC is focused on implementing effective waste management strategies and preserving native flora and fauna. This ensures that tourism growth remains balanced with environmental stewardship.

Through homestays and eco-friendly adventure tourism, KTC aims to integrate local communities into the tourism landscape, allowing them to become guardians of the area’s natural beauty. With strategic planning and investment, Riverston is set to evolve into a premier adventure tourism destination, offering visitors meaningful experiences while promoting sustainable growth and showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
