The government is set to expedite the development of the Batticaloa Airport, aiming to transform the currently underutilized facility into a more viable regional aviation hub. Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku, made the announcement during an official visit to the site on April 5.

The Deputy Minister conducted an inspection tour of the airport premises and reviewed a series of proposed development plans presented by airport officials. Noting that the airport is presently operating at a financial loss, he underscored the importance of a comprehensive feasibility study to guide future expansion.

In line with the government’s commitment to boost regional connectivity and infrastructure, Kodithuwakku directed officials to fast-track the proposed upgrades. These are expected to enhance passenger services, improve facilities, and stimulate regional economic growth.

During his visit, the Deputy Minister also met with residents living near the airport. Addressing their concerns, he pledged that longstanding road issues in the area would be resolved without delay, assuring the community of the government’s commitment to inclusive development.

The initiative reflects a broader national strategy to strengthen domestic aviation and foster balanced regional progress.
