Sometimes the journey is the destination, especially when it comes to travelling by train. The best rail experiences do more than take travellers from one point to another – they offer deeper immersion into the locales, transport passengers back in time, and evoke a more graceful and unhurried world. For those planning a slower, more immersive holiday, these scenic adventures by rail are worth considering.

Exploring the world’s largest archipelagic country requires numerous trips to truly appreciate its remarkable cultural and topographic diversity, and a long train ride is a good place to start. The Argo Wilis train connects the cities of Bandung in the west and Surabaya in Java, Indonesia’s most populous island.

Frequent travellers recommend sitting on the left when departing Bandung for the best views of the majestic West Java mountains. The journey takes about 10 hours, and at US$77 for a one-way ticket in the panoramic carriage (even less in the executive coach), it is one of the best value-for-money train trips available.

The Vivid Express, Taiwan

The seasonal journeys from Singapore to Malaysia aboard one of the region’s most glamorous trains are perfect for those who appreciate slow, ultra-luxurious travel. A highlight for 2025 is the six-day Tiger Express (11-17 May), which ventures into the ancient forests of Taman Negara, home to the elusive Malayan tiger.

The itinerary includes stays at Raffles Singapore and The Datai Langkawi, but the true highlight is the journey itself. Opulent carriages, adorned with cherry wood panelling and elegant chinoiserie, set the scene for gourmet dining curated by chef André Chiang. Scenic landscapes and curated excursions complete this dreamlike rail adventure.

Last year, The Vietage by Anantara unveiled a second luxury carriage, operating between the coastal city of Nha Trang in Southern Vietnam and Quy Nhon in the country’s central region. The five-hour journey chugs through the picturesque Central Vietnam countryside and offers an exclusive experience – there are only 12 seats (booked by reservation) organised into private booths of two.

An afternoon tea experience serves up regional specialties such as lobster and caviar, along with cakes, pastries, and a selection of premium teas and full-bodied coffee. The stylish luxury carriage also features a bar, where travellers can order train-themed cocktails or mocktails, and a dedicated spa area offering 15-minute head or shoulder treatments.

Japan’s extensive rail network makes almost every part of the country accessible, with many local lines offering scenic journeys. Among the newest additions is the Hana Akari, a beautifully designed sightseeing train by JR West. Featuring three spacious cars with plush swivel chairs, private box seats, and traditional art from its destinations, the train highlights the natural beauty and cultural richness of West Japan.

Its routes periodically change, with past journeys connecting Tsuruga and Kinosaki Onsen, renowned for hot springs and exquisite cuisine. In early 2025, Hana Akari will run alongside the Limited Express Kanikani Hamakaze between Osaka and Hamasaka.
