Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunneththi, recently conducted an inspection tour of the Nilwala River to assess its potential for tourism and transportation.
The visit followed a decision made at the Matara District Coordinating Committee, chaired by Minister Handunneththi, focusing on the conservation and development of the river. Additionally, the minister emphasized the need for urgent solutions to address recurring floods in the area.
Several key decisions were made during the inspection, including:
- Implementing immediate flood mitigation measures through a technical committee
- Utilizing the Nilwala River for cargo and passenger transport
- Developing tourism along the river and its surrounding areas
- Facilitating tourist transportation to Sinharaja Forest via Akuressa
- Implementing measures to prevent riverbank erosion
- Accelerating the removal of garbage and waste from the river
The initiative is expected to enhance economic opportunities in the region while ensuring environmental sustainability. Authorities will now proceed with further studies and planning to implement these measures effectively.
