A pioneering moment in South Asia’s tourism industry unfolded with the grand opening of “Amba Yaalu,” Sri Lanka’s first 100% female-staffed tourist hotel. Located amidst a serene mango plantation bordering the tranquil Kandalama Reservoir, this thematic resort celebrates women’s empowerment and Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
Developed by Thema Collection, the resort is inspired by the iconic Sinhala novel Amba Yaaluwo (Mango Friends) and the golden era of Sri Lankan cinema. The property showcases a unique blend of nostalgia and modernity, incorporating vintage cinematic elements such as an old movie theater, antique camera equipment, and retro-themed restaurant décor.
The grand opening ceremony was marked by cultural and spiritual significance, including a Pirith sermon conducted by two female Buddhist monks—a symbolic blessing for the hotel and its all-women team.
Chandra Wickramasinghe, Chairman of Thema Collection, stated, “Amba Yaalu is a testament to the boundless potential of women in the hospitality industry. This venture demonstrates how women can lead and excel in every aspect of hotel management.”
Under the leadership of Madhuwanthi Adhikari, the hotel manager, and Kaushalya Batagoda, the head chef, the property promises an unparalleled guest experience. Chef Batagoda, a proud native of Anuradhapura, shared, “It’s an incredible honor to lead the culinary department of such a groundbreaking initiative.”
The resort is also home to 457 carefully cultivated TJC mango trees, which lend a thematic charm to its surroundings, further connecting the property to its literary inspiration.
Amba Yaalu is more than a hotel; it’s a bold step toward gender equality and a celebration of Sri Lanka’s cultural treasures, setting a new benchmark in the South Asian tourism industry.
